Configuration Automation and Control

Reduce Time - Reduce Errors - Reduce Cost - Reduce Risk

The Challenge:

Throughout the application lifecycle existing data must be analysed. For example:

  • Business-as-usual support to investigate and resolve issues
  • Current setups when designing changes or enhancements
  • Customisations to understand the impact of upgrades and patches
  • The effect of upgrades and patching on existing setups
  • The effect of upgrades and patching on application components to determine where testing should be focussed
  • Changes to seeded data during upgrades and patching and the effect on business processes and security
  • Change over time to support audit and control requirements

Traditional manual methods provide no easy mechanism for a user to analyse existing data. Documentation is difficult to interpret and may not be a true reflection of the current set up. Standard application reports for setup areas are generally poor and inflexible. Users usually revert to manually reviewing data within the system itself, running standard reports and then manually manipulating the output, writing ad-hoc queries or a combination of these approaches. None of these methods are effective.

The need for analysis is perhaps most acutely felt during patching and upgrade cycles, where potentially thousands of changes occur and organisations have no simple way to identify the impacted items and their effects. The burden of finding the impact and any resulting issues is generally left to the testing cycle. However, as impacts have not been systematically identified it can never be known whether the test cycle has successfully identified them all or not, increasing the risk that some impact is missed. Further, as impacts cannot be easily isolated, testing scope is often broadened to compensate for the lack of clarity; this means, inevitably, areas are tested that were not actually affected adding to the cost of managing the change.

Identify more than 45 types of customisation automatically

Identify all components affected by patching

Identify down to the code level which customisations are affected by patching

How ConfigSnapshot Helps:

Beyond documentation, ConfigSnapshot provides comprehensive and flexible analysis of setup data. Rather than a “one size fits all” reporting approach, users are able to target data needed for the specific business requirement and format output to aid comprehension of the results.

General analysis capabilities include:

  • Flexible filtering to focus on specific records, including complex conditional criteria
  • Differentiating seeded data from implementation specific data with the ability to include or exclude seeded data
  • Identification of inactive data with the ability to include or exclude inactive data
  • Reporting data created or updated since a specific date/time or by specific users
  • Tailoring exactly which data levels and fields are reported for any configuration step
  • Identifying records changed either over time or by specific users

Specific analysis reporting is also provided as standard within ConfigSnapshot including:

  • Customisation identification – automatically reporting over 40 different types of customisation
  • Customisation impact analysis – reporting key objects affected by upgrades or patches that are referenced in customisation code; providing details right down to the code level
  • Patch impact analysis – identifying all components affected by the application of one or more patches

For regular analysis requirements ConfigSnapshot enables you to create predefined reports without the need for any coding. These reports can be run either on an ad-hoc basis or by scheduling them – individually or as part of a set.

"ConfigSnapshot is no doubt a great tool for generating comparison reports to identify differences in different e-Business environments. However, the real power lies in the migration component. The migration engine is extremely accurate and the execution precision prevents errors during configuration migrations. The details window is very helpful for configuration visualizations. DevOps is about automation, ConfigSnapshot is the bridge between IT and development"
